What is Scaling and Root Planing?

Posted .

If you’ve ever looked around on a dentist’s website, you’ve probably seen a service offered called “scaling and root planing.” Have you ever wondered what those are?

They’re common, integral parts of a regular dental checkup, and something that the team at Precision Periodontics & Dental Implants in Orlando, Florida, do for all patients who need it. To help you better understand what scaling and root planing is and why you may need it, we put together this blog post.

What is it?
Scaling and root planing is the process of removing hardened plaque – called tartar – from your teeth, and around your gum line as well as into your roots. When plaque has the chance to build on your teeth, it becomes too hard to remove yourself. In addition, that hardened plaque is a haven for bacteria that cause cavities and gum disease.

Why do I need it?
You’ll need scaling and root planing if you have any tartar on your teeth, near your gums, or bacterial toxins in your roots. You can’t let that much bacteria sit in your mouth for too long without running the risk of infection or cavities.

It’s also too difficult to remove at home without risking damage to your teeth and gums. Our trained staff knows how to safely plane and scale your teeth, and they’ll let you know during your appointment if it’s something you need.
