Rebuild the Support Your Smile Depends On

Restore Tissue Lost to Gum Disease

Healthy teeth depend on more than healthy gums. They also rely on the surrounding bone and periodontal ligament for strength and stability. When advanced periodontal disease destroys these structures, deep pockets or bone defects may develop around your teeth’s roots.

Guided tissue regeneration at Precision Periodontics & Dental Implants creates an environment in which new bone and supporting tissue can grow. Rather than simply managing the damage caused by gum disease, this procedure supports your body’s natural ability to repair the affected area.

What Is Guided Tissue Regeneration?

Guided tissue regeneration is a periodontal procedure used to treat certain areas of bone loss around natural teeth. During treatment, the periodontist thoroughly cleans the damaged area and places a small barrier membrane between the gum tissue and the underlying bone. Gum tissue heals more quickly than bone. Without a barrier, it may grow into the space before slower-growing bone and ligament cells can develop.

The membrane protects the area and gives these cells the time and space needed to regenerate. Depending on your needs, GTR may be performed with a bone graft or other regenerative material. Some membranes gradually dissolve as the area heals, while others may need to be removed during a later appointment.

When Is a GTR Dental Procedure Recommended?

Guided tissue regeneration may be considered when periodontal disease has created a localized bone defect around one or more teeth. It can be especially helpful when enough healthy tissue remains to support predictable healing. You may be evaluated for GTR if you have:

What to Expect During Guided Tissue Regeneration

We begin by making the treatment area comfortable with local anesthesia. The gum tissue is gently lifted so plaque, tartar, and diseased tissue can be removed from around the tooth root. A regenerative membrane is then positioned over the bone defect. Bone-grafting material may also be added when appropriate. The gum tissue is carefully secured over the treatment site to allow healing to begin.

Some tenderness and swelling are normal after periodontal surgery. You will receive personalized instructions concerning eating, cleaning the area, medications, and follow-up visits. Because regeneration takes time, the underlying bone and attachment tissues may continue developing for several months.

Preserve Your Natural Smile

Results vary according to the type of defect, overall health, oral hygiene, and other factors. Maintaining regular periodontal care is essential for protecting the treated area. For the right patient, guided tissue regeneration may:
